Looking East (Two women with a child)
Once I was travelling with two midwives in a remote area in Yemen. They wanted to check up on a Bedouin woman who had experienced some difficulty in giving birth to her child. When we drove up to the Bedouin camp I was struck by the strength and stoic posture of the women that came out to meet us. At the same time there was a lot of curiosity in the way they looked at me, a ‘stranger’ from the West. In this painting I try to capture some of that strength, dignity and captivating presence of that moment in time.
