ARTIST STATEMENT
“My work is about entering into a different world by creating space for my memories and reinterpreting these. What has been lost, I try to recover but not only that. I want to reinvent and retell these impressions in a new way and through the recreative act of making art.
In my artwork I find inspiration from objects, plants, and animals that are so unique and characteristic for the country Yemen and I combine these with elements of Yemeni architecture and ornate decorations. Each painting draws upon a theme or memory of simple everyday experiences of the life I experienced there.
By combining images and different painting techniques I redefine my memory to create new imaginary kaleidoscopic colorful and all together a different world that invites other people in.
My work is both figurative as well as abstract in form. I apply various techniques such as fine painting, linoleum stencils and applying transparent layers of acrylic stains to create a feeling of depth. The acrylic paints are generally used for the backgrounds and the patterns whereas the oil paints are applied for glazing and for the finer and real to life figurative details.“

BIOGRAPHY
Stefanie Wierda is a visual artist based in the Netherlands. She works with mixed media of acrylic and oil paint. Her work explores the theme of remembrance is strongly influenced by the culture of the Middle East.
Her work draws inspiration from people, architecture, plants, animals and patterns that are so unique and characteristic for Yemen where she lived during her childhood.
She at studied part-time at the The Liberal Art School of The Hague (2010-2011) and earned her degree at The Fine Arts Academy of Haarlem-Leiden in 2019.
Stefanie’s work is both figurative and abstract in form. Elements from Yemeni architecture are often reflected in her work.
She has exhibited her work in Lisse, Haarlem and The Hague.

11.03.2019 Publieksprijs Uitreiking - Kunst Congres West Pulchri Studio
Maandag 11 maart 2019 won ik op het Kunstcongres met Perspectief van regio West de publieksprijs met het werk ‘Dreamer’. 30 Kunstenaars werden geselecteerd en kregen een podium om werk in Galerie Pulchri Studio in Den Haag te exposeren. De inzendingen werden beoordeeld door een kunstcommissie, bestaande uit Marijke Geméssy (Pulchri Studio), Peter Jonkers (Business Art Service) en Sander du Floo (beeldend kunstenaar en o.a. winnaar Kunstcongres 2014).
De kunstwerken We are soldiers van Patrick Hamer en Tea wisdom van Xander Rijkee werden door de jury als winnende werken gekozen. Tot mijn grote blijdschap koos het p
ubliek mijn werk Dreamer als winnaar. Samen met de twee andere winnaars mocht ik als prijs deelnemen aan de rondreizende tentoonstelling.
